John Beatty (General)
John Beatty (born December 16, 1828 in Sandusky , Ohio , † December 21, 1914 in Columbus , Ohio) was an American officer and politician . Between 1868 and 1873 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .
Career
John Beatty attended public schools in his home country. From 1852 he worked in the banking business. Together with his brother he ran a bank in Cardington . During the Civil War he served as an officer in various units in the Union Army . He took part in the Battle of the Stones River and the Battle of Chattanooga , among others , and achieved the rank of Brigadier General. After the war he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party .
After the tragic death of Congressman Cornelius S. Hamilton , who had been slain by his own son, Beatty was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives in Washington, DC, in the by-election February 1868 took up his new mandate. After two re-elections, he could remain in Congress until March 3, 1873 . By 1869, the work of Congress was overshadowed by tension between Republicans and President Andrew Johnson , which culminated in a narrowly unsuccessful impeachment trial. From 1869 to 1871 Beatty was chairman of the Committee on Enrolled Bills . He also headed the Public Properties Committee.
In 1873 John Beatty founded the Citizens Savings Bank in Columbus , of which he was president until 1903. In 1882 he sought unsuccessfully to nominate his party for the gubernatorial elections in Ohio. In 1886 and 1887 he was a member of his state's charity committee. In 1903 he retired. He died in Columbus on December 21, 1914.
