St. Mary

The church of St. Marien , locally also called Marienkirche , is a listed Roman Catholic church building in Witten in the Ennepe-Ruhr district in North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

The church was built in the 1840s according to plans by the Cologne cathedral builder Ernst Friedrich Zwirner . It is a three-aisled basilica in the neo-Romanesque style. Contrary to the original plan, it was built with a mighty bell tower and vaulted ceiling inside. The foundation stone was laid in 1846 while the construction of the church was already under way. From 1872 to 1891 the church was used by the Old Catholics . The Catholic parish built a new wooden church as an emergency church at the intersection of Hauptstrasse and Ardeystrasse .

The church was painted in color for the first time in 1907. In the 1920s, it was completely repainted; the vaults were designed with a starry sky. An enthroned figure of Christ with flanking angels was painted in the dome . The paintings were lost when the church was badly damaged in World War II. In 1982 they were partially reconstructed.

Furnishing

Today's furnishings, in particular the altar , baptismal font , tabernacle and candlestick, date largely from the 1970s and were designed by the sculptor Josef Baron (Hemmerde). From the original neo-Romanesque high altar, only two carved wooden panels remain in the church.

Marian organ

The organ was built in 2009 by the organ builder Siegfried Schmid . The instrument is arranged in the German-Romantic style. It has 58  stops on four manual works and a pedal . In addition to the swell unit (III. Manual), the positive and high-pressure unit (II. And IV. Manual) are also designed to be swellable. The game actions are mechanical, the stop actions are electric.
