Holy Spirit Church (Hagen)
The Heilig-Geist-Kirche is the church of the catholic community Heilig-Geist in Hagen (Westphalia) in the district of Emst . The foundation stone was laid on May 9, 1954. The consecration took place on June 12, 1955 by the Paderborn auxiliary bishop Franz Hengsbach . The design of the church comes from the well-known Cologne architect Dominikus Böhm , who significantly shaped church construction in Germany in the post-war years.
Today the Heilig-Geist parish belongs together with the St. Elisabeth parish to the Hagen-Mitte pastoral association in the Archdiocese of Paderborn .
Building history
The Catholic community of the then small suburban settlements of Hagen, Emst, Bissingheim and Eppenhausen came into being from 1924 under the direction of the vicar and later martyr Heinrich König . In 1926 a "makeshift church" was built in just under five months. After the completion of the new church, this was converted into a parish hall and has been called Heinrich-König-Haus since 2002 .
As early as 1946, the pastor of the Holy Spirit community, Liborius Valpertz, contacted the architect Dominikus Böhm, who inspected the possible building site that same year. The altitude of the site is said to have inspired him. In May of the following year he sent the first plans and a detailed description of his idea to the community. But the plans had to be dormant for a few years before a specific order was received in 1953.
Structure
The sacred building was erected in just 15 months according to the architect's plans, which were modified several times. The round bell tower, which can be seen from afar, rises 47 meters high with its conical and slanted roof top, which has earned it the nickname “pencil”. The outside of the church is clad with red brick .
The sober community room with a height of over 15 meters contains a stucco ceiling as the only decorative element , which symbolizes the tongues of fire of Pentecost , the patronage festival of the community.
The view of the person entering is drawn to the altar and the apse surrounding it, which in turn is illuminated on two sides by six simple ribbon windows at full height. The colored glazing of the ribbon windows planned by Dominikus Böhm was postponed for cost reasons and was never implemented. The extraordinary high windows and the red clinker cladding of the building are very similar in construction to the St. Engelbert church in Essen, which was built by Dominikus Böhm at the same time .
organ
The organ was built in 1979 by the organ building company Stockmann (Werl). The slider chests -instrument has 27 registers on two manuals and pedal . The stop actions are electric, the game actions are mechanical. The organ prospect was designed by the architect Peter Groote (Hagen). The organ was subsequently equipped with a 4000-fold electronic composer system.
