The DITIB Merkez Mosque in Duisburg of the Turkish-Islamic Union of the Institution for Religion (DİTİB) is an Islamic place of prayer in the district of Duisburg - Marxloh .

Space program

The mosque , built in the traditional Ottoman style , offers space for 800 people to pray in the prayer room and 400 in the gallery , making it one of the largest mosques in Germany. The building has a footprint of 40 by 28 meters, a minaret height of 34 meters and a 23 meter high silver-colored dome roof. The gross usable area amounts to approx. 2,500 m². A muezzin does not call to prayer outside the building.

A meeting place with an Islam library / Islam archive, a bistro and several seminar rooms is integrated into the building, the construction of which was funded by the EU and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia with around 3.4 million euros. The managing director of this meeting place was Zülfiye Kaykin until 2010 , who was then State Secretary in the Ministry of Labor, Integration and Social Affairs of North Rhine-Westphalia from July 2010 to September 2013 .

history

The prayer room

In 2004 the idea came up to replace the temporary mosque in the former colliery canteen with a new mosque. The plan was developed to build a meeting place for religions. An advisory board included representatives of the Christian churches, political parties and social groups in the district. The mosque community has grown from 500 to 750 members.

The mosque was completed in 2008 and opened on October 26, 2008. At the inauguration, the Roman Catholic Bishop of Essen Felix Genn , the President of the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland Nikolaus Schneider , the Prime Minister of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia Jürgen Rüttgers and the President of the Office for Religious Affairs of Turkey Ali Bardakoğlu were present. The fact that the company of Solinger Günther Kissel , who was known for his extreme right-wing political views, had built the mosque had caused some irritation in advance .

The construction of the mosque is also called the miracle of Marxloh because there was an unusually fast and smooth construction period between planning (2004) and opening (2008) and there were no public protests or legal disputes. This is attributed to the close cooperation between the mosque association, the city, Christian communities and other parties involved.

In November 2009, however, surprising personnel changes became known: For example, the press spokesman for the DITIB Merkez mosque community Mustafa Kücük was relieved of his office, and Mehmet Özay announced his resignation as chairman of the community. Apparently there had been disputes behind the scenes between the mosque community and the sponsoring association of the meeting place. The new chairman of the municipality was Muhammed Al, and his deputy was Yüksel Aydemir. In addition, Hüseyin Cetin (press officer and education officer), Selahattin Avci and Erdal Sen (responsible for the specialist library), Yusuf Aydin (public relations and exhibitions), Saban Anac (accountant), Murat Sencan (youth work) and Özil Mert (secretary) were appointed to the board. elected.

In January 2010 the DİTİB announced that the dispute had been resolved, but in February 2010 the state government's integration officer commented on the dispute. In April 2010, WDR.de reported on conflicts behind the scenes and increasing isolation. There were also disputes between the mosque and the police. The newly elected board of the meeting place in May 2010 (chairman: Ismail Komsucuk, second chairman: Helga Maria Poll, secretary: Gülhanim Anac, treasurer: Sitki Palabiyik) declared that they wanted to leave the past behind. We want to find common paths and overcome the bumps between cultures. Also in May 2010, the then NRW Integration Minister Armin Laschet took protection of the mosque community. He praised her for the good integration work.

In March 2011, Muhammed Al was confirmed as chairman of the mosque community. At the beginning of 2013, Necati Mert was elected chairman of the community.
