The synagogue was built according to plans by the builder Liesenhoff from Oestrich. The synagogue has a cubic structure with a square floor plan and thus evokes an oriental style. In contrast to this, however, it is covered with a flat, slated pyramid roof. On the east side (towards Jerusalem) the five-sided Toranische is added as an apse . It has a round window above with the image of the Star of David . The building, which is provided with large arched windows, is assigned to the so-called classicistic arched style. In the Toranic was the Torah shrine with the Torah scrolls . In the synagogue there was a lectern called Bima for reading the Torah . The former women's gallery in the synagogue had a wide indentation, which was obviously necessary so that the women could see the entire lectern with the reader from above.

time of the nationalsocialism

During the November pogrom in 1938 , the Star of David on the roof was torn down, the roof, windows, doors and interior fittings were destroyed. The Jewish community of Hohenlimburg was forced to sell the synagogue. A manufacturer from Hohenlimburg converted the building into a factory hall.

Decay and restoration

On December 4, 1975, the fur warehouse housed in the synagogue burned down. The roof structure was also affected. Then the building began to decline. The citizens' action “Synagoge Hohenlimburg”, founded in 1980, contributed significantly to the fact that the building was preserved and that it was restored according to plans by the architect Gerd Pickenhan.

On September 15, 1986, in the presence of members of the former Jewish community of Hohenlimburg and Hagen, the restored synagogue building was handed over to the public - as a memorial for the city of Hagen.

The commemorative plaque in the Old Synagogue bears the inscription: "BAAL SCHEM TOW - IN MEMORY LIES THE SECRET OF SALVATION - IN MEMORY OF THE FORMER JEWISH COMMUNITY HOHENLIMBURG".

The Old Synagogue in Hohenlimburg has been listed in the Route of Industrial Culture since 2013 .
