St. Ludgerus

The Catholic parish church of St. Ludgerus is a listed church building in Altschermbeck , a district of Schermbeck in the northwest of North Rhine-Westphalia .

History and architecture

The founder of the diocese, Liudger , donated the two farms of Rüste and Schermbeck to Werden Abbey in 799 . Liudger is probably also the church founder. The parish is mentioned in a document in 1184. Around this time the original patronage of St. Dionysius changed to that of the church's founder.

The neo-Romanesque basilica was built from 1914 to 1915 by the architect Ludwig Becker . It replaced a building from 1841 when the Catholics from Schermbeck, Bricht and Overbeck were combined with those from Alt-Schermbeck in a new parish. Parts of the inventory from the previous building were transferred to the new building. The figurative, colored glazing in the arched windows of the apse , with which the building was originally equipped, are no longer preserved. After the 2nd Vatican Council, the interior was thoroughly redesigned by Manfred Ludes , the painting and the high altar removed, which was replaced by a simple stone block made of shell limestone. In 2011 another renovation was carried out by the architects Franz-Jörg Feja and Peter Kemper.
