The Catholic parish church of St. Mariae Rosenkranz is a listed church building in Styrum , a district of Mülheim an der Ruhr ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

History and architecture

With the construction of the steel and rolling mill in Mülheim by August Thyssen, the number of inhabitants in Styrum increased tenfold between 1810 and 1870 from 500 to almost 5,000. In what was then Ober-Styrum, pastoral work began around 1885, with an emergency church and a brick factory being built. An industry foundation made it possible to build a church based on the plans of Caspar Clemens Pickel . The Vienna cathedral master builder Friedrich Freiherr von Schmidt made the preliminary design . The architect Franz Boegershausen was in charge of construction.

The neo-Gothic building with a basilica cross-section is not vertical, but rather bound by strong horizontal lines. The buttresses that were common at the time are not visible, but rather retracted, so the individual zones appear without any disturbing structures. On the west side, the two bands of the blind arcades frame a central rose window . The west side has a stepped gable that is reminiscent of the city hall fronts of the north German brick Gothic. The tower, strict and sharp-edged, almost still classical , flanks the choir on the north wall. In the interior, the very narrow aisles are striking. The wall structure with arcades, triforium zone and exposed upper aisle is in three parts. The originally Gothic-style painting was covered in a contemporary and pictorial way in 1930. After the building was damaged in World War II, the paintings were completely removed during renovations from 1946 to 1970. The winged altar and the pulpit have been preserved from the equipment from before the war.
