John S. Savage

John Simpson Savage (born October 30, 1841 in Clermont County , Ohio , †  November 24, 1884 in Wilmington , Ohio) was an American politician . Between 1875 and 1877 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Savage attended the public schools in his home country and then worked as a teacher himself for five years. He also worked as a farmer. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1865, he began practicing this profession in Wilmington. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

In the congressional election of 1874 Savage was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded the previously defeated Republican John Quincy Smith on March 4, 1875 . Since he was not confirmed in 1876, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1877 . After his time in the US House of Representatives, John Savage returned to work as a lawyer. He died on November 24, 1884 in Wilmington, where he was buried. Since December 31, 1868 he was married to Lydia Ayers, with whom he had four children.
