Charles J. "Charlie" Luken (born July 18, 1951 in Cincinnati , Ohio ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . From 1991 to 1993 he was a member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the first  congressional district of the state of Ohio.

biography

Charlie Luken was born in Cincinnati to Tom Luken . In 1973 he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Notre Dame . In 1976 he completed his subsequent law degree at the University of Cincinnati . In the same year he practiced as a lawyer for the first time. He wanted to succeed his uncle Jim Luken as mayor of Cincinnati in 1979, but the Democratic Party refused to support his candidacy. As an Independent Candidate, he was unsuccessful in his candidacy. In 1981 he was finally elected to the Cincinnati City Council as the Democratic Party candidate. He sat there until 1984. Following his mandate on the city council, Luken served as mayor of his hometown from 1984 to 1991 .

His father Tom Luken decided not to stand for election in the 1990 congressional elections. Charlie decided to run for the seat of the 1st District of Ohio to succeed his father. He was able to prevail against Ken Blackwell , a former mayor of Cincinnati. In 1991 he took up his mandate in Washington. In 1993 he left the Congress, he did not stand for re-election. After he returned to Ohio, he was from 1993 to 1999 news anchor for local station WLWT-TV, an NBC subsidiary, where Jerry Springer also started his career.

1999 Luken was again Mayor of Cincinnati. In 2004 he decided not to run for mayor anymore. In 2005 he resigned from office and was succeeded by Mark Mallory .

Charlie Luken is divorced and has three children. He lives in Cincinnati.
