Frederick Cleveland Smith
Frederick Cleveland Smith (born July 29, 1884 in Shanesville , Tuscarawas County , Ohio , † July 16, 1956 in Marion , Ohio) was an American politician and doctor. Between 1939 and 1951 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Frederick Smith attended public schools in his home country. He then studied osteopathy in Kirksville . For a few years he worked in this medical branch. He then studied medicine in Frankfurt am Main and Vienna . From 1917 he practiced as a doctor in Marion. He also founded the Frederick C. Smith Clinic there . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1936 and 1939 he was mayor of Marion.
In the 1938 congressional election , Smith was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the eighth constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Democrat Thomas B. Fletcher on January 3, 1939 . After five re-elections, he was able to complete six legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1951 . By 1941, the last New Deal laws of the federal government were passed there under President Franklin D. Roosevelt . Since 1941, the work of the Congress was also shaped by the events of the Second World War and its consequences. In his final years as a Congressman, Frederick Smith saw the start of the Cold War . In 1950 he renounced another candidacy.
After his time in the US House of Representatives, Smith practiced as a doctor again. He died on July 16, 1956 in Marion, where he was buried.
