John C. Speaks (1903)

John Charles Speaks (born February 11, 1859 in Canal Winchester , Ohio , †  November 6, 1945 in Columbus , Ohio) was an American politician . Between 1921 and 1931 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Speaks attended public schools in his home country and then worked in the sawmill and lumber business. Between 1907 and 1918 he was the Fish, Game, and Conservation Officer responsible for hunting and the environment for the state of Ohio. For over 40 years he was a member of the national guard of his state, in which he rose to brigadier general. He participated as a major in the Spanish-American War of 1898 . He was used in Puerto Rico . In 1916 he was stationed on the Mexican border during a conflict with Mexico . After that, he was a brigade commander in the First World War . Politically, he joined the Republican Party . In 1918 he ran unsuccessfully for the US House of Representatives.

In the congressional elections of 1920 , Speaks was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the twelfth constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Democrat Clement L. Brumbaugh on March 4, 1921 . After four re-elections, he was able to complete five legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1931 . Since 1929 the work of the Congress was also shaped by the events of the Great Depression. In 1930 Speaks was not re-elected. In 1932 and 1934 he tried unsuccessfully to return to Congress. He died in Columbus on November 6, 1945.
