John E. Henderson

John Earl Henderson (born January 4, 1917 in Crafton , Allegheny County , Pennsylvania , †  December 3, 1994 in Cambridge , Ohio ) was an American politician . Between 1955 and 1961 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1920, John Henderson and his family came to Cambridge, Ohio. Three years later they moved to a dairy farm near that town. He attended the local public schools including Cambridge High School. In 1939 he graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware . After studying law at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and being admitted to the bar in 1942, he began working in this profession in Cambridge in 1946. In between he served in the US Army during World War II , where he rose to captain of the infantry. He was deployed in the European theater of war and was assigned to the military history department after the armistice. After his military service, he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party in addition to his legal work . Between 1951 and 1954 he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives .

In the 1954 congressional election , Henderson was elected to the 15th  constituency of Ohio in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Democrat Robert T. Secrest on January 3, 1955 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1961 . This period was marked by the events of the Cold War and the civil rights movement .

In 1960, Henderson declined to run again. After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, he initially practiced as a lawyer again. Between 1980 and 1986 he was an Appellate Judge in Guernsey County . John Henderson died on December 3, 1994 in Cambridge, where he was also buried.
