John McSweeney

John McSweeney (born December 19, 1890 in Wooster , Ohio , † December 13, 1969 there ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party . From 1923 to 1929 1937 to 1939 and from 1949 to 1951 he was a member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the 16th and 23rd  congressional districts of the State of Ohio.

biography

John McSweeney was born in Wooster in 1890. There he attended public schools. In 1912 he graduated from the College of Wooster . In 1912 and 1913 he was employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad Co. He taught at Wooster High School from 1913 to 1917. During World War I he served in the US Navy , most recently with the rank of captain . He was also aide-de-camp for General Charles S. Farnsworth . For his war effort he was awarded the Purple Heart and the Croix de guerre . He studied law at the Inns of Court . In 1919 he returned to the United States, where he resumed teaching. From 1919 to 1921 he was a member of the Wooster city council and was president. In 1925 he was admitted to the bar and opened a law firm in Wooster.

As a representative of the Democratic Party, he was first elected to the US House of Representatives in 1922 by the citizens of the 16th Congress District. In 1924 and 1926 he was re-elected. After leaving Congress, he returned to Wooster and resumed his practice as a lawyer. From 1937 to 1939 he sat again for the 16th Congress District in the House of Representatives. In 1940 he was an unsuccessful candidate for a seat in the Senate . A candidacy for governor of Ohio in 1942 was also unsuccessful. During World War II he served as a Lieutenant Colonel in Italy and returned to Ohio in 1946. There he resumed his work as a lawyer. In 1948 he was re-elected to the US House of Representatives, this time as a representative of the 23rd District of Ohio. He represented this district until 1951. Renewed candidacies failed in 1950 , 1952 and 1956 . He retired in his hometown and died there in 1969. He was buried in Wooster Cemetery.
