Tobias A. Plants
Tobias Avery Plants (born March 17, 1811 in Sewickley , Beaver County , Pennsylvania , † June 19, 1887 in Pomeroy , Ohio ) was an American politician . Between 1865 and 1869 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Tobias Plants initially only received a limited education. At the age of twelve he completed an apprenticeship as a saddler. Then he attended Beaver College in Meadville . After that he taught as a teacher. After studying law at the same time and being admitted to the bar, he began to work in this profession from 1846 in Athens (Ohio). Soon after, he moved to Pomeroy. Politically, he joined the Republican Party in the 1850s . From 1858 to 1861 he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives . Around 1860 he published his own newspaper, the Pomeroy Weekly Telegraph .
In the congressional election of 1864 , Plants was elected to the 15th constituency of Ohio in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Democrat James R. Morris on March 4, 1865 . After a re-election, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until January 3, 1869 . During this time the civil war ended . The 13th and 14th amendments were also ratified. Since 1865, the work of Congress has been overshadowed by tension between Republicans and President Andrew Johnson , which culminated in a narrowly unsuccessful impeachment trial.
In 1868 Tobias Plants decided not to run again. Between 1873 and 1875 he served as an appellate judge in Meigs County . After that he continued his legal practice. From 1878 until his death he was President of the First City Bank of Pomeroy . He died on June 19, 1887 in Pomeroy, where he was also buried.
