Troy Balderson

William Troy Balderson (born January 16, 1962 in Zanesville , Ohio ) is an American Republican politician . He has been a member of the United States House of Representatives for Ohio's 12th Congressional District since September 2018 . Before that, he was a member of the House of Representatives from 2009 and then the Ohio Senate .

Family, education and work

Balderson grew up in Zanesville, southeast Ohio, and attended high school there . He studied business administration from 1980 to 1982 at Muskingum College and from 1982 to 1983 at Ohio State University . He then worked on the family farm in nearby Adamsville , and from 1987 to 2008 was co-owner and manager of Balderson Motor Sales , an auto dealership that it claims has been family-owned for three generations.

In 1985 he married Angela Balderson; they have one son and divorced in 2014. Troy Balderson lives in Zanesville.

Political career

Balderson was elected to the House of Representatives, the lower house of the Ohio State Legislature , with 54 percent of the vote in November 2008 after his fellow party member Jim Aslanides did not run again due to a term limit, and represented there from January 5, 2009 and after his re-election in 2010 without a challenger the 94th electoral district by July 13, 2011. Since that day Balderson has sat for the 20th constituency in the Senate, the House of Lords of Ohio, after having been nominated for that seat the day before. He won re-election in 2016 again without a challenger.

Balderson was running for the United States House of Representatives in Ohio's 12th congressional electoral district when previous elector Pat Tiberi announced his retirement in October 2017. Balderson prevailed on May 8, 2018 in the internal party primary of the Republicans both for the by-election for the remaining Tiberi mandate and for the general election in November 2018 for the 116th Congress with about 29 percent of the vote each. His strongest competitor was Melanie Leneghan, supported by the right-wing conservative Freedom Caucus , who was defeated by about 600 votes. Both had spent $ 2 million attacking each other in television commercials. The Ohio Supreme Court dismissed her contestation of the result because of irregularities in August 2018.

The election campaign in the wealthiest district of the state, which has been represented by a Republican since 1983 and, according to the Cook Partisan Voting Index, has a structural inclination towards the Republicans (115th Congress: R + 7), became unexpectedly close: the 31-year-old Democrat Danny O'Connor , who works in the administration of Franklin County , was roughly level in the polls, so that the election was classified as completely open ("toss up") by political observers. The Democrats had already made strong gains over the last election in 2016 in the extraordinary by-elections for congressional seats in the 115th Congress . In March 2018, your candidate Conor Lamb managed to win Pennsylvania's 18th congressional constituency in the coal region of southwestern Pennsylvania, which went to Trump in 2016 with a large majority .

Balderson prevailed on August 7, 2018 by 1,680 votes (0.8 percent) out of over 202,000 votes, after Trump won that district by 11 percent in 2016. The tight result had created weeks of uncertainty; the result was established on August 24, 2018. Balderson had been supported by national groups such as the Congressional Leadership Fund , including several million dollars for television spots in which the leader of the Democrats Nancy Pelosi was portrayed as an enemy and O'Connor was attacked as "Dishonest Danny". In the last few days before the election, Trump and his Vice President Mike Pence appeared at campaign events for Balderson, but he also received the support of Governor John Kasich , one of Trump's harshest intra-party critics and former MPs in this congressional electoral district, so that Balderson could stage himself as a candidate for reconciliation . He was sworn in on September 5, 2018 in the House of Representatives and has held the congress mandate ever since.

O'Connor and Balderson faced each other again in the November 2018 general election in the 12th Congressional electoral district. O'Connor had significantly more donations, mostly from small donors outside of Ohio. However, Balderson won the election with 51.6% of the vote, making it a member of the 116th Congress of the United States , which will meet until January 3, 2021.

Positions

Balderson was considered a moderate Republican for years, but sided with President Trump in the congressional election campaign : He campaigned for the tax reform of the Republicans, the construction of the border wall to Mexico and the abolition of the Obamacare health care reform . At the same time he affirmed that he did not want to attack the social security systems. He stands up against abortion ( pro-life ), for the right to gun ownership and against regulations that he believes hinder job creation.

In March 2012, Balderson declared his support for then-Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney .
