Charles Franklin West (born January 12, 1895 in Mount Vernon , Ohio , †  December 27, 1955 in Bradenton , Florida ) was an American politician . Between 1931 and 1935 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Charles West attended the public schools of his home country and then studied until 1918 at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware . In 1918 and 1919 he was American Vice Consul in Naples . In 1920 he enrolled at Harvard University . Between 1924 and 1930 he taught political science at Denison University in Granville . Politically, he joined the Democratic Party .

In the 1930 congressional election , West was elected to the 17th  constituency of Ohio in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Republican William Mitchell Morgan on March 4, 1931 . After a re-election, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until January 3, 1935 . This time was initially determined by the events of the Great Depression. Since 1933, the first of the Roosevelt government's New Deal laws were passed. In 1935, the provisions of the 20th Amendment to the Constitution were applied for the first time , according to which the legislative period of the Congress ends or begins on January 3rd.

In 1934 Charles West renounced another candidacy for the US House of Representatives. Instead, he unsuccessfully sought his party's nomination for the US Senate elections . Between February and August 1935 he worked for the Farm Credit Administration in Ohio; 1935-1938 he was Deputy Secretary of the Interior ( Under Secretary of the Interior ). In June 1936 he took part as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia , on which President Franklin D. Roosevelt was nominated for re-election. Until 1940 he was a member of the United States Processing Tax Board of Review . Between 1940 and 1947 he worked as a private businessman. In 1947 West became Professor of Political Science at the University of Akron . In 1954 he was nominated by his party for that year's congressional election; but he had to do without it for health reasons. West died in Bradenton on November 27, 1955 and was buried in his native Mount Vernon.
