Thomas C. Sawyer

Thomas Charles Sawyer (born August 15, 1945 in Akron , Ohio ) is an American politician . Between 1987 and 2003 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Life

Thomas Sawyer attended Buchtel High School in Akron and then studied at the University of Akron until 1970 . After that he worked as an English teacher. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . He was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives from 1977 to 1983 . From 1984 to 1986 he served as mayor of Akron City; he was succeeded by Don Plusquellic .

In the 1986 congressional election , Sawyer was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 14th  constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded John F. Seiberling on January 3, 1987 . After seven re-elections, he was able to complete eight legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 2003 . The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 took place during this period . In 2002 he was no longer nominated for re-election by his party.

In 2006 he was defeated in his party's primary election as he sought his return to Congress. In the same year he was elected to his state's education committee. He has served in the Ohio Senate since 2007 . He has a child with his wife Joyce.
