Bob Shamansky

Robert Norton "Bob" Shamansky (born April 18, 1927 in Columbus , Ohio , † August 11, 2011 in Bexley , Ohio) was an American politician . He served as a representative of the Democratic Party from 1981 to 1983 for one term in the United States House of Representatives .

Life

Shamansky was born in Columbus in 1927. He graduated from Ohio State University in 1947 and Harvard Law School in 1950 . He then got his license to practice law. From 1950 to 1952 he was also an employee in the Counter Intelligence Corps of the US Army .

Shamansky first ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives in 1966, but lost the election to Republican incumbent Samuel L. Devine . 14 years later, in 1980, Shamansky challenged Devine again, this time winning the election. He was the first Democrat since 1939 to represent this district . In the 97th Congress he was a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the Science and Technology Committee .

After a reallocation of Shamansky's constituency in 1982, when his district was awarded a large part of the republican 17th district, he lost the next election and his seat in the House of Representatives. He was succeeded by the future governor of Ohio, John Kasich . In 2006 he ran again for the seat, but lost that election to Pat Tiberi .

Shamansky died in August 2011 at the age of 84.
