Del Latta

Delbert Leroy "Del" Latta (born March 5, 1920 in Weston , Wood County , Ohio , † May 12, 2016 in Bowling Green , Ohio) was an American politician . Between 1959 and 1989 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Life

Del Latta attended public schools in North Baltimore . In 1938 he graduated from McComb High School . He then attended Findley College . Between 1938 and 1941 he was a member of the Ohio National Guard and for some time in the United States Army . In 1942 and 1943 he was a member of the Marine Corps Reserve at the time of World War II . After studying law at Ohio Northern University and being admitted to the bar in 1944, he began working in this profession in Bowling Green . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1953 and 1958 he was a member of the Ohio Senate . In 1968, 1972, 1976 and 1996 he was a delegate to the respective Republican National Conventions .

In the 1958 congressional election , Latta was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fifth constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Cliff Clevenger on January 3, 1959 . After 14 re-elections, he was able to complete a total of 15 legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1989 . During this time, the final phase of the civil rights movement , the Vietnam War and, in 1974, the Watergate affair fell . Since 1975, Latta sat as the highest-ranking Republican on the budget committee .

In 1988 he renounced another congressional candidacy. Instead, he campaigned for his son Bob to be his successor. However, this narrowly lost in the primaries of his party against Paul Gillmor , who was then also elected. After Gillmor's death in 2007, Bob Latta succeeded him in Congress. Del Latta has not appeared politically after his time in the US House of Representatives. He spent his old age at Bowling Green.
