Humphrey H. Leavitt

Humphrey Howe Leavitt (born  June 18, 1796 in Suffield , Hartford County , Connecticut , †  March 15, 1873 in Springfield , Ohio ) was an American lawyer and politician of the Democratic Party . December 6, 1830 to July 10, 1834 he was a member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the 11th and 19th  congressional districts of the State of Ohio.

Leavitt was born in Suffield, Connecticut in 1796. In 1800 he moved with his parents to the Northwest Territory. His father bought a piece of land in Leavittsburg and built a living for himself. The city was named after the family. At the age of 16, Leavitt served in the British-American War . Leavitt then worked as a teacher. In 1816, after studying law , he was admitted to the bar in Cadiz . He held the arbitration office in Harrison County from 1818 to 1820. In 1819 he moved to Steubenville . In 1823 he became a prosecutor in Jefferson County .

In 1825 Leavitt was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives. In 1827 he moved to the Ohio Senate . From 1830 to 1834 he was a member of the House of Representatives at the federal level, first for the 11th district, later for the 19th. On June 28, 1834, he was appointed a judge in the federal district court for the district of Ohio by President Andrew Jackson . The Federal Senate confirmed the appointment on the same day. He took up his new office on June 30th. In 1855, the judicial district was split into two courts, Leavitt moved as a judge to the federal district court for the southern district of Ohio. He moved to Cincinnati , in 1871 when he left office in court he moved to Springfield.

Leavitt was married to Marie Antoinette McDowell. They both had three children. Leavitt died in Springfield in 1873. He was buried in Spring Grove Cemetery , Cincinnati.
