Henry S. Neal

Henry Safford Neal (born August 25, 1828 in Gallipolis , Ohio , †  July 13, 1906 in Ironton , Ohio) was an American politician . Between 1877 and 1883 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Henry Neal attended the public schools of his home country and then until 1847 Marietta College . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1851, he began to work in this profession in Ironton. By 1851 he was also a prosecutor in the local Lawrence County . Politically, he joined the Republican Party founded in 1854 . He served in the Ohio Senate between 1861 and 1863 . In 1869 he was appointed American consul in Lisbon ( Portugal appointed). After the resignation of the ambassador there, between December 1869 and July 1870 he exercised the function of business agent. He then returned to Ohio. In 1873 he was a delegate to a constitutional convention of his state.

In the congressional election of 1876 , Neal was elected to the Eleventh constituency of Ohio in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded John L. Vance on March 4, 1877 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1883 . Between 1879 and 1881 he represented the twelfth district of his state there before returning to the eleventh district. From 1881 he headed the District of Columbia Administration Committee . In 1882 he decided not to run again.

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Henry Neal practiced again as a lawyer in Ironton. In 1884 and 1885 he was a lawyer for the US Treasury Department ( Solicitor of the Treasury ). After that he continued his legal practice. He died on July 13, 1906 in Ironton, where he was also buried.
