William E. Finck
William Edward Finck (born September 1, 1822 in Somerset , Perry County , Ohio , † January 25, 1901 there ) was an American politician . Between 1863 and 1867 and again in 1874 and 1875 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .
Career
William Finck attended public schools in his home country and then St. Joseph's College . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1843, he began to work in Somerset in this profession. Politically, he was a member of the Whig Party at the time . In 1850 he ran unsuccessfully for the US House of Representatives. A year later he was a member of the Ohio Senate . In June 1852 he took part as a delegate at the Whigs federal party conference. After the dissolution of his party, he switched to the Democrats . In 1861 he sat again in the State Senate.
In the congressional elections of 1862 Finck was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the twelfth constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Samuel S. Cox on March 4, 1863 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1867 . During this time the civil war ended . Since 1865, the work of Congress has been overshadowed by tension between Republicans and President Andrew Johnson , which culminated in a narrowly unsuccessful impeachment trial. In addition, the 13th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified in 1865 .
In 1868, William Finck applied unsuccessfully for the post of judge on the Supreme Court of Ohio . After the resignation of Congressman Hugh J. Jewett , he was elected by election for the twelfth seat of Ohio as his successor to the US House of Representatives, where he ended the current legislative period between December 7, 1874 and March 3, 1875. After his time in the US House of Representatives, he practiced as a lawyer again. He died on January 25, 1901 in his hometown of Somerset, where he was also buried.
