Lorenzo Danford (born October 18, 1829 in Washington , Ohio , †  June 19, 1899 in St. Clairsville , Ohio) was an American politician . Between 1873 and 1879 and again from 1895 to 1899 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Lorenzo Danford attended the common schools and then for two years a school in Waynesburg ( Pennsylvania ). After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1854, he began to work in St. Clairsville in this profession. Politically, he was a member of the American Party at the time . In the presidential election of 1856 he was elector for this party. Between 1857 and 1861 he served as the prosecutor in Belmont County . Between 1861 and 1864 he served in the Union's army during the civil war , in which he was promoted to captain. He then continued his legal practice. Politically, he had meanwhile become a member of the Republican Party . In 1864 he was an electoral candidate for President Abraham Lincoln's re-election .

In the congressional election of 1872 Danford was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 16th  constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded John Bingham on March 4, 1873 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1879 . In 1878 he renounced another candidacy.

After the temporary end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Danford practiced again as a lawyer. In the presidential election of 1892 he was again a Republican elector. In 1894 he was re-elected to Congress in the 16th District of his state, where he replaced Albert J. Pearson on March 4, 1895 . After two re-elections, he was able to exercise this mandate until his death on June 19, 1899. During this time the Spanish-American War of 1898 fell . From 1897 to March 3, 1899 he was chairman of the Committee on Immigration and Naturalization .
