Castalla is a town in the Comarca of L'Alcoià, in the province of Alicante , Spain . Castalla is located in a mountainous area. Castalla is directly linked to Alicante and Valencia by the CV-80 national road via the A-7 motorway. In 2019 Castalla had 10,124 inhabitants.
history
The Castillo de Castalla (Castle of Castalla) is a fortress that was originally built by the Moors . In its structure, however, it shows a medieval design. The fortress was first built in the 11th century. One of the special features is the Arab cistern from the 12th to 13th centuries. The palace complex dates from the 14th to 15th centuries and forms a kind of castle complex within the actual fortress. Due to the increasing threat from pirates ( Berbers ) from the Mediterranean, the three-story Torre Grossa (large tower) was built in 1579, which served as a crenellated watchtower.
Castalla received city rights in 1890 from the regent Maria Christina .
economy
The economy is based on different industries such as construction, furniture manufacturing, textile industry and above all Castalla is known for the production of toys and wrought iron handicrafts. Agriculture is characterized by the cultivation of almonds, olives and viticulture. Today tourism is another important source of income for the city administration.
Attractions
- The restored fortress of Castalla is located on a 780 m high ridge and its origins go back to the time of the Moorish rule. The fortress is made up of three parts, the Palau, the Torre Grossa and the Arms Square. Period: 11th to 16th century.

- the Ajuntament town hall (mid 17th century), Renaissance style
- Museo del Fester, in this museum the various regional costumes are kept and shown. The exhibition center of the extras association also includes the various traditional costumes and suits that are still worn today for the festival of the Moros y Cristianos (Moors and Christians) by the festival participants of both parties. The festival is celebrated on the first four days of September each year, with the opening ceremony on August 31st at night.
