Els Poblets is a Spanish municipality in the Comunitat Valenciana with 2705 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019; 800 Germans), which is located in the north of the province of Alicante in the Marina Alta region. The picturesque little village (old part of Els Poblets) is close to the mountains as well as directly on the Mediterranean Sea . The small river Girona flows through the village . On October 12, 2007, a flood caused severe damage.

history

The history of Els Poblets (German: Die Dörfer) goes back to Roman times . Today an old watchtower and the remains of a Roman villa are the witnesses of bygone times.

Els Poblets was created from the merger of three villages: Setla, Mira-rosa and Miraflor. In the 17th century they first merged under the name Els Llocs (German: The Places), but separated again. On May 6, 1971, they reunited for the second time and gave themselves the name "Els Poblets".

Todays situation

Today the place lives from traditional trade and handicrafts, but also increasingly from tourism . The new part of Els Poblets, which is located in Setla, is together with Las Rotas the most expensive residential area in the region around the city of Dénia. There are numerous, spacious holiday homes, but also houses (especially those owned by Germans) who either have their second residence in Dénia or Els Poblets or have settled there entirely. Land prices in Els Poblets are very high, which in recent years has resulted in almost exclusively wealthy people settling there.

Els Poblets is also a place of celebration. The patron saint of Els Poblets is celebrated in honor of the Divino Salvador (German: holy Savior) every year on July 28th. It goes back to the discovery of a statue of a saint on Platja Almadrava. According to legend, the crew of a ship wanted to sacrifice this statue to the sea at the first sight of land after a hard journey across the sea. The Salvador Church, where the statue of the saint is kept, was recently completely restored.

The patronage festival in Els Poblets differs fundamentally from the festivities such as B. from Austria knows. It lasts for a week. The festivities include bulls , paella nights became, fun fair, Correfocs (fireworks), street parades, Pilota of "tournaments and boxing show Moros y Cristianos ". The festivities culminate on August 6th, " Savior's Day ". For this purpose, the residents of the place are awakened by firecrackers during a despertà . Then there are street parades, a procession and a holy mass in honor of the patron saint. The end of the festivities is an impressive fireworks display every year.

The partner community has been Lugnano in Teverina in Umbria, Italy , since 2004 .
