Pilar de la Horadada is a city in the Spanish province of Alicante , in the Comunidad Valenciana . It is located in the extreme south of the Alicante province in the Comarca Vega Baja del Segura . One can compare the Spanish comunidad with a German federal state, the province with a regional council and the comarca with a district. Pilar de la Horadada borders the Murcia region . It is the southernmost municipality of the Comunidad Valenciana. Pilar de la Hordada counted 21,905 inhabitants ( INE ) on January 1st, 2019 .

The origin of the name "Pilar de la Horadada" lies in the special construction of numerous watchtowers during the time of the Reconquista . At that time, watchtowers were widespread on the coast to monitor the sea and repel pirates. One of these towers, the "Torre Horadada", which means "Perforated Tower" in English, was named because of the holes that connected the various apartments inside the tower. This was a simple communication system between the guards in the tower.

The municipality is located in the extreme south of the Valencian comarca Vega Baja del Segura . It is 230 km from Valencia , 45 km from Murcia , 41 km from Cartagena , 68 km from Alicante , 36 km from Orihuela , and 18 km from Torrevieja .

In terms of rainfall, Pilar de la Horadada is the driest municipality in the Comunidad Valencia. There is little rainfall. The annual rainfall is less than 300 mm. However, torrential rains can occur.

Attractions

The Pilar Church on New Years.
  • The Parish Church of Our Lady of Pilar . It is located in the city center and was built in 1981 on the site of the earlier, destroyed church. It is dedicated to the Virgin Pilar and it contains several valuable sculptures, in particular by the local artist D. José María Sánchez Lozano.
  • Watchtower from the 15th century. It was built in 1591 to protect the residents of the area from pirates.
