history

Orihuela Cathedral

Orihuela was the capital of the province and kingdom of the same name. It is first mentioned in the year 576, when Orihuela is called the capital of the Roman province of Aurariola , for which it also gives the name. On April 5, 713, the Visigoth general Theodomir was appointed King of Todmir. In 788 the kingdom of Todmir becomes a province of the Ummayyad emirate of Córdoba with the capital Murcia . In 1037 the province passed to the Emirate of Valencia , before it fell to the Kingdom of Dénia as the Principality of Murcia just 16 years later and regained its independence in 1086. In 1212 the principality became the Kingdom of Murcia. In 1304 Orihuela lies directly on the border between the kingdoms of Castile and Aragon .

In 1366 the city became part of the Kingdom of Aragon. Fourteen years later, Orihuela becomes the capital of the Interior de Orihuela , which reached two thirds of the province's present area. Orihuela was first referred to as a city on September 11, 1437 . In 1707 King Charles V made Orihuela the capital of the province of the same name. In 1737 Alicante , Elche , Monforte del Cid , Xixona , Villajoyosa , Agost , Busot , San Juan and Muchamiel became independent from the province of Orihuela and formed the province of Alicante. In 1799 Orihuela also became part of the province of Alicante .

In 1810, under Napoleon Bonaparte , the city became part of the new province of Río Segura with the capital Murcia. Twelve years later another change of territory takes place and Orihuela becomes part of the province of Murcia. In 1833 the city returned to the province of Alicante. In 1920 there were nationalist movements in Orihuela calling for the city to return to the province of Murcia. From 1988 to 2006, different studies by the universities of Andalusia , Castile and Murcia show that Orihuela has always had a closer connection to Murcia than to Valencia. a. the spoken language (pronunciation, vocabulary and language habits), architecture, agriculture, folklore, musical celebrations, instruments and gastronomy.

The new Statute of Autonomy of April 11, 2006 of the Valencian Community , which abolished the Orihuela dialectalmente , strengthens the nationalist movement and leads to a new lack of unity with the rest of the Valencians. The centralistic policies of the Valencian government, for example health investments, give impetus to some political initiatives of anti-Valencian nationalism.

In September 2019, Orihuela was hit by a severe storm . Within three days, 500 mm of precipitation fell, the highest value since weather records began.
