Francisco Álvarez Martínez
Francisco Cardinal Álvarez Martínez (born July 14, 1925 in Santa Eulalia de Ferroñes , Llanera , Asturias , Spain ; † January 5, 2022 in Madrid ) was a Spanish clergyman , Roman Catholic Archbishop of Toledo and Primate of Spain.
Life
Francisco Álvarez Martínez received the sacrament of ordination in 1950 after studying philosophy and Catholic theology at the Seminary in Oviedo . He then received his doctorate in canon law at the Comillas Pontifical University in Madrid , and then became Archbishop's secret secretary and parish chaplain, student chaplain and general vicar of the Archdiocese of Oviedo .
Pope Paul VI appointed him Bishop of Tarazona on April 13, 1973 . The Apostolic Nuncio in Spain, Archbishop Luigi Dadaglio , donated his episcopal ordination on June 3 of the same year. Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Saragossa , Pedro Cantero Cuadrado , and the Archbishop of Pamplona y Tudela , José Méndez Asensio .
On December 20, 1976, Pope Paul VI appointed him. to the Bishop of Calahorra y La Calzada-Logroño . Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Orihuela-Alicante on May 12, 1989 .
On June 23, 1995 he was appointed Archbishop of Toledo by Pope John Paul II . In 1991 he became a member of the Presidium of the Spanish Bishops' Conference , which he remained until his retirement. From February 21, 2001, Francisco Álvarez Martínez was a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria Regina Pacis a Monte Verde of the college of cardinals .
On October 24, 2002, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation. Then Cardinal Álvarez Martínez moved to Madrid.
Álvarez Martínez took part shortly before the age of 80 as one of the oldest cardinals entitled to vote in the 2005 conclave , in which Benedict XVI. was chosen.
Cardinal Álvarez Martínez died on January 5, 2022 at the age of 96 in Madrid.
