George L. Converse

George Leroy Converse (born June 4, 1827 in Georgesville , Franklin County , Ohio , †  March 30, 1897 in Columbus , Ohio) was an American politician . Between 1879 and 1885 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Converse attended the public schools in his home country and then Central College . In 1849 he graduated from Denison University in Granville . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1851, he began to work in this profession in Columbus from 1852. In 1857 he was a prosecutor in Franklin County. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1860 and 1863 and again from 1874 to 1876 he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives ; in 1874 he was its speaker as the successor to Nelson H. Van Vorhes . From 1864 to 1865 he was a member of the State Senate .

In the congressional election of 1878 Converse was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the ninth constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Republican John S. Jones on March 4, 1879 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1885 . From 1881 to 1883 he represented the twelfth and then the 13th district of his state there. Between 1879 and 1881 he was chairman of the Committee on Public Lands . In 1884 he renounced another congressional candidacy.

After serving in the US House of Representatives, George Converse returned to practice as a lawyer. In 1892 he was a delegate and president of the Nicaraguan Canal Convention . He performed the same function at their successor conference in New Orleans . He died on March 30, 1897 in Columbus, where he was also buried.
