Jacob E. Davis

Jacob Erastus Davis (born October 31, 1905 in Beaver Village , Pike County , Ohio , †  February 28, 2003 in Naples , Florida ) was an American politician . Between 1941 and 1943 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jacob Davis attended Beaver High School until 1923 and then studied at Ohio State University in Columbus until 1927 . After a subsequent law degree at Harvard University and his admission to the bar in 1930, he began to work in this profession. Between 1931 and 1935 he was a prosecutor in Pike County. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . From 1935 to 1937 he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives . In 1937 he headed the democratic group there. At the same time he was also President of the House in 1937 ( Speaker pro tempore ). From 1937 to 1940 he served as an appellate judge in Pike County.

In the 1940 congressional election , Davis was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded James G. Polk on January 3, 1941 . Since he was not confirmed in 1942, he could only complete one term in Congress until January 3, 1943 . This was shaped by the events of the Second World War .

Jacob Davis worked for the Department of the Navy in 1943 and 1944 ; from 1945 to 1960 he was Vice President and then until 1970 President and CEO of the Cincinnati- based Kroger Company . He died in Naples on February 28, 2003 and was buried in Cincinnati.
