Wayne Hays Levere (* 13. May 1911 in Richland Township , Ohio ; † 13. February 1989 in Wheeling , West Virginia ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party . January 3, 1949 to September 1, 1976 he was a member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the 18th  congressional district of the state of Ohio.

biography

Hays was born in eastern Ohio. In 1933 he graduated from Ohio State University . From 1939 to 1945 he gained his first experience in local politics. During this time he served as Flushing's mayor . Hays served in the Ohio Senate from 1914 to 1942 . From 1945 to 1949 he was a commissioner in Belmont County for four years . In 1941, Hays was called up for military service in the US Army . In 1942 he was discharged from military service due to medical problems.

In the 1948 congressional election , Hays was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Democratic candidate in Ohio's 18th Congressional District. He was re-elected a total of 13. During this time he was chairman of the influential United States House Committee on House Administration from 1971 until his resignation . In the 1972 presidential election , Hays received 5 votes in the Democratic National Convention without having announced a candidacy. On September 1, 1976, Hays resigned from his mandate due to a sex scandal. From 1979 to 1981, Hays was again politically active, during which time he sat in the Ohio House of Representatives .

Hays died in Wheeling, West Virginia in 1989. He was buried in the Saint Clairsville Union Cemetery in St. Clairsville .
