J. Harry McGregor (1955)

J. Harry McGregor (born September 30, 1896 in Unionport , Jefferson County , Ohio , †  October 7, 1958 in Coshocton , Ohio) was an American politician . Between 1940 and 1958 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Harry McGregor attended his home public schools, West Lafayette College and Oberlin College . During the First World War he was a sergeant in the US Army in 1917 and 1918 . Between 1918 and 1945 he worked in West Lafayette in the timber and construction industries. Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party . He served on the West Lafayette School Board for eight years. Between 1935 and 1940 he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives , of which he was president in 1939 and 1940.

After the death of MP William A. Ashbrook , McGregor was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the by-election due for the 17th seat of Ohio , where he took up his new mandate on February 27, 1940. After eight re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on October 7, 1958 . During this time, the Second World War , the beginning of the Cold War , the Korean War and, domestically, the civil rights movement fell . From 1947 to 1949 and again from 1953 to 1955 he was chairman of the Special Committee on Chamber Improvements . At the time of his death, McGregor had already been nominated for another term.
