Steve LaTourette (2011)

Steven C. "Steve" La Tourette (* 22. July 1954 in Cleveland , Ohio ; † 3. August 2016 in McLean , Virginia ) was an American politician of the Republican Party . From 1995 to 2013 he was a member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the 14th  congressional district of the state of Ohio.

Life

Steve LaTourette studied law at the University of Michigan and Cleveland State University after graduating from Cleveland Heights High School in 1972 . Before being elected to the US House of Representatives, he served as Lake County Chief Prosecutor from 1989 . He was instrumental in the capture of Jeffrey Lundgren .

From 1995 to 2003 he was a representative of the 19th Congressional District in the House. This district was dissolved for the 2002 congressional election and united with the 14th district. Since then, LaTourette has represented the 14th district as the successor to Thomas C. Sawyer . He was able to defend his seat in the subsequent elections. In the House he was a member of the Committee on Appropriations .

On July 31, 2012, LaTourette announced that he would not run for re-election in November of that year. He justified this with the “toxic” atmosphere in Congress and with the ideological stubbornness of the radical wings of the two major parties. Since the primary for the election had already taken place, it was up to a committee of Republican district chairmen to nominate a new candidate. Matt Dolan , a former member of the Ohio House of Representatives, was eligible . The democratic candidate was accountant Dale Blanchard. After LaTourette's resignation, the party leadership considered advising Blanchard to resign in order to be able to set up a possibly more promising candidate. The Republican candidate was David Joyce , who won the main election in November 2012 and succeeded LaTourette.

Private

LaTourette was married in their first marriage until 2003. In 2004 he married his office manager, Jennifer Laptook. He was a Methodist and lived in Geauga County .

LaTourette died of pancreatic cancer in August 2016 .
