Bloomsbury Square
The Bloomsbury Square is a small rectangular Park in London district Bloomsbury in the borough of Camden .

To the north of the park are Great Russell Street and Bedford Place , which leads to Russell Square . The Bloomsbury Way runs south . West of the park is close to the British Museum and Holborn tube station is the closest underground station to the southeast.
history
The park was created by Thomas Wriothesley, 4th Earl of Southampton, in the late 17th century and was originally called Southampton Square . It was one of the first small gardens in the style of a garden square in London. The Earl's House - at that time the Southampton House later the Bedford House , as the property of the Earls of Southamptons passed into the possession of the Dukes of Bedford , who owned the entire north side of the park, where Bedford Place is today. On the other two sides of the park there were lined up typical townhouses of the time, which originally housed members of the aristocracy and gentry .
In the early 19th century, Bloomsbury was no longer “en vogue” in the upper class. Therefore, the then Duke of Bedford moved out of Bedford House, which was eventually demolished and replaced by more townhouses. In the 19th century, mostly middle class members lived around the park. The writer Isaak D'Israeli lived at number 6 from 1817 to 1829, where his son, who later became Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli , also lived with him for a time. In the 20th century, most of the buildings were converted into offices.
In Bloomsbury Square there is a bronze statue of Charles James Fox made by Richard Westmacott . Charles James Fox was a British statesman, a member of the Whigs and acquainted with the Dukes of Bedford. None of the original buildings from the 17th century are preserved today. There are many beautiful buildings from the 18th and early 19th centuries here.
The Royal Pharmaceutical Society was based in an 18th century house on the south side of the park, in part thanks to John Nash . The east side of the park is occupied by an early 20th century office building called Victoria House . It was built for the Liverpool Victoria, who also used the building for many decades. When the Greater London Authority was founded in 2000, the Victoria House was also under discussion as the new City Hall .
The park is now open to the public and was completely renovated in 2003.

- The second movement of Symphony No 2 (A London Symphony) by Vaughan Williams is supposed to represent Bloomsbury Square on a November afternoon ("Bloomsbury Square on a November Afternoon").
- In the musical Oliver! Mr. Brownlow lives in Bloomsbury Square while he lives in Pentonville in Charles Dickens's Oliver Twist , on which the musical is based .
