Ralph Pomeroy Buckland (born January 20, 1812 in Leyden , Franklin County , Massachusetts , †  May 27, 1892 in Fremont , Ohio ) was an American politician . Between 1865 and 1869 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In the year he was born, Ralph Buckland moved with his parents to Ravenna , Ohio, where he later attended public schools. He then graduated from Tallmadge Academy and Kenyon College in Gambier . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1837, he began to work in Fremont in this profession. Politically, he was a member of the Whig Party at the time . From 1843 to 1845 he was mayor of the city of Fremont. In June 1848 he attended the Whig National Convention in Philadelphia as a delegate . Buckland served in the Ohio Senate between 1855 and 1859 . Between 1862 and 1865 he served in the Union Army during the Civil War . He took part in several battles and campaigns and rose from colonel to brigadier general. He was later promoted to major general in brevet . On January 6, 1865, he resigned from military service. Politically, he joined the Republican Party founded in 1854 after the dissolution of the Whigs .

In the congressional election of 1864 Buckland was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the ninth constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Warren P. Noble on March 4, 1865 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1869 . Since 1865, the work of Congress has been marked by tension between Republicans and President Andrew Johnson . which culminated in a narrowly failed impeachment process. In 1865 and 1868 the 13th and 14th amendments to the Constitution were ratified.

In 1868 Buckland renounced another candidacy. After serving in the US House of Representatives, he returned to practice as a lawyer. In June 1876 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Cincinnati , where Rutherford B. Hayes was nominated as a presidential candidate. From 1877 to 1880 he was a director of the Union Pacific Railroad . In the presidential election of 1884 , he served as the Republican elector who voted for the losing candidate James G. Blaine . Buckland also co-founded the Sandusky County Bar Association , which he chaired for many years. He died on May 27, 1892 in Fremont, where he was buried.
