Benjamin Butterworth (* 22. October 1837 in Maineville , Warren County , Ohio ; † 16th January 1898 in Thomasville , Georgia ) was an American politician of the Republican Party . From 1879 to 1883, and from 1885 to 1891 he was a member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the first  congressional district of the state of Ohio.

biography

Benjamin Butterworth was born near Maineville, Warren County. There he attended public schools and the Academy in Maineville. He studied law at Ohio University . In 1861 he was admitted to the bar and he opened a law firm in Cincinnati . In 1868 he was appointed deputy district attorney . From 1874 to 1875 he served in the State Senate .

In 1879 he was elected to the US House of Representatives for the first time as a representative of the 1st District of Ohio. He sat there until 1883. He was a delegate to the 1880 Republican National Convention in Chicago . After he left Congress, he became chairman of the Smithsonian Institution . In 1883, he was appointed chairman of the Northern Pacific Railway by US President Chester A. Arthur . In 1885 he was re-elected to the House of Representatives. This time his term of office lasted until 1891. In his last legislative period he was chairman of the Committee on Patents . In 1890 he no longer ran for election.

After leaving Congress again, he went back to his legal profession, this time in Washington, DC In 1896 he was appointed head of the United States Patent and Trademark Office by US President Grover Cleveland . He held this office until his death. He died in Thomasville in 1898, where he was recovering. He was buried in Rock Creek Cemetery in Washington DC.
