Gottfried von Schluesselberg
Gottfried von Schlüsselberg († June 5, 1308 ) was a Franconian nobleman who belonged to the founding environment of the Schlüsselau Abbey and was buried in its church.
Origin and family
Gottfried came from the aristocratic family of key mountain . Together with his brother Konrad I , he supplemented the founding of the monastery by his father Eberhard IV von Schlüsselberg , who was married to Elisabeth von Hohenzollern-Nuremberg , with further gifts and thus enabled the construction of the monastery church. But he also donated elsewhere: In 1298 Pope Boniface VIII confirmed the patronage right of the church in Böttigheim, which noble Gottfried von Schlüsselberg had given them, to the Commander and the brothers from the German House in Mergentheim. Heinrich von Schluesselberg, a son or nephew of Gottfried, had joined the Teutonic Order, who appeared in 1300 as a witness for Adelheid von Hohenlohe and Bishop Mangold von Würzburg.
Two marriages, one heiress
Gottfried was married first to Mechthild, daughter of Count Poppo von Wertheim , and the second to Margarethe, daughter of Count Wilhelm von Katzenelnbogen . His daughter Elisabeth († after 1350) married Count Konrad junior von Vaihingen and seems to have been his only heir. Her husband Konrad von Vaihingen tried in vain on November 11, 1323 before the court in Nuremberg to enforce her alleged claims against Bishop Johann von Bamberg , who had filled the office in place of her cousin Ulrich von Schlüsselberg , who was intended for this purpose and who died in 1322 .
Since the princes and the other estates did not come to a joint judgment, King Ludwig agreed with his advice that Konrad von Vaihingen's claim against the bishop and his bishopric was unjustified, “after Burgrave Friedrich von Nürnberg , Heinrich Kochmeister von Nortenberg, the court (Court) scribe Adolf and Master Hermann, pastor of Sankt Sebald in Nuremberg, had declared on their oath that the deceased Emperor Heinrich (VII.) had acquitted the bishopric of Bamberg from the aforementioned lawsuit by right court and judgment ”.
Elisabeth was a cousin of Konrad II von Schlüsselberg , so Gottfried was not his father and Ulrich von Schlüsselberg was probably a common cousin.
Gottfried's tomb
Gottfried's tomb was originally placed prominently in the middle of the choir of the Klosterkirche Schlüsselau. The grave slab bears the Schlüsselberg coat of arms, including two five-petalled roses. The inscription shows him as a founder ("fundator"). His sister Gisela von Schlüsselberg was currently the first abbess of the monastery.
