Hermann Andreas Römer (also Roemer ; * July 8, 1880 in Pfrondorf ; † December 26, 1958 in Markgröningen ) was a Protestant pastor in Bietigheim , university lecturer in Markgröningen and author of regional history publications.

Life

Hermann Römer was born as the son of Heinrich Römer, pastor in Stuttgart , and Martha geb. Schinckel. From 1886 to 1888 he attended the elementary school in Großheppach , from 1888 to 1893 the Latin school in Waiblingen and from 1893 to 1898 the Karls-Gymnasium in Stuttgart. From 1898 to 1902 Roemer, like many of his ancestors, studied Protestant theology at the universities of Tübingen and Halle . His university lecturers included Theodor von Haering , Alfred Hegler , Karl Holl , Martin Kähler , Max Reischle , Adolf Schlatter and Christian Friedrich Seybold .

In 1902 he passed the first theological service exam and entered the Württemberg church service. From 1903 to 1905 he worked as a theological assistant teacher at the Basel Mission Seminar . From 1907 to 1910 he was a repentant at the Evangelical Theological Seminary in Tübingen. In the academic year 1908/1909 he headed the lower department of the New Testament seminary and took on a teaching position. In 1911 he received his doctorate and returned to church service, including as vicar in Kirchheim unter Teck . In 1912 he became the parish priest in Bietigheim. In 1918 he switched to the Markgröningen teachers' seminar in the former residential palace as a "study professor" .

In Markgröningen he carried out historical research and published, among other things, works on the history of the city about his two places of work, Bietigheim and Markgröningen. In doing so, he followed up on the work of Ludwig Heyd . He paid special attention to the reform theologian and Markgröninger city pastor Reinhard Gaißer , whom he described as the “first social revolutionary on a Württemberg pulpit”. During the Nazi regime , the experienced genealogist supported Markgröninger citizens who had to submit proof of Aryan status.

After the Second World War he and his wife Liesel Römer built the Markgröningen City Library. With her, Römer had five sons and a daughter, who, as married Annemarie Griesinger , made a political career in the CDU and in 1972 became the first woman to become a member of a state government in Baden-Württemberg.

Political activities

Römer founded a Christian workers' association in Bietigheim and was active in the party-like " Christian People's Service " in the Weimar Republic . After the Second World War he was one of the founding members of the Markgröninger local association and the Ludwigsburg district association of the CDU .

Reception and commemoration

The city of Markgröningen granted Römer honorary citizenship and named a street after him. Its two-volume history of the city still serves as a basic work for local historical research .
