Eberhard IV von Greifenstein-Schlüsselberg (* around 1220, † 1283 ) was one of the founders of the Schlüsselau Abbey . The House of Bavarian History counts him as Eberhard II von Schlüsselberg.

origin

Eberhard came from a family of Franconian noble freemen first mentioned in 1114 , who initially called themselves "von Adelsberg", then "von Greifenstein" and finally von Schlüsselberg . Eberhard was a son of Eberhard I von Schlüsselberg and was married to Elisabeth von Hohenzollern-Nürnberg .

Life

In the twelve-year succession dispute after the death of Duke Otto of Meranien (1248), Eberhard and his brother Ulrich fought for the bishops of Bamberg and Würzburg. In order to compensate them for the high costs of their weapon aid, Bishop Betthold had to pledge the Neideck and Senftenberg centers to the Schlüsselbergers on a long-term basis. From then on, they held four neighboring high court districts between Aisch and Allsbach and used them as the basis for creating territorial rule . Owning the “Cent” Neideck was also associated with the lucrative toll and escort rights on the busy road from Baiersdorf to Hallfeld. The castle Neideck , which was strategically located to control it, was then expanded by the Schlüsselbergers.

Together with his sons Gottfried von Schlüsselberg and Konrad I von Schlüsselberg, Eberhard founded the Schlüsselau Monastery in 1280 as the house monastery and burial place of his family. He appointed his daughter Gisela as the first abbess. A deed of foundation has not been handed over.

Eberhard last appeared in Schwäbisch Hall in 1282 as a witness for King Rudolf von Habsburg and the Cistercian convent Gnadental .
