Earle Morris
Earle Morris, Jr. (* 14. July 1928 in Pickens , Pickens County , South Carolina ; † 11. February 2011 ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party .
During his political career, Morris was a member of both the House and Senate of South Carolina . In 1971 he was elected lieutenant governor , an office he held until 1975. From 1976 to 1999 he was a comptroller general of the state . Because of his work, Morris gained a lot of reputation, especially in northwest South Carolina. In Pickens County , among other things, a highway was named after him.
In 2003, that reputation began to crack when Carolina Investors , of which Morris was director, collapsed as a result of risky deals. More than 8,000 investors lost their money, a sum of $ 275 million , killing their savings, college funds, and retirement plans. Morris has now been tried along with several other executives for their role in the company's collapse. He has been found guilty of 22 stock market fraud and sentenced to three years and eight months in prison. He started his detention in January 2008. In March 2010, he was released from prison on health grounds - Morris had prostate cancer .
Morris died on February 11, 2011 at the age of 82. He was married.
