Washington H. Timmerman

Washington Hodges Timmerman (born May 29, 1832 in Edgefield County , South Carolina , †  July 14, 1908 in Aiken County , South Carolina) was an American politician . Between 1893 and 1897 he was lieutenant governor of the state of South Carolina.

Career

Washington Timmerman grew up in Edgefield County. After a subsequent medical degree and his approval as a doctor, he began to work in this profession. He also worked as a farmer. During the civil war he served in the Confederation Army , in which he rose to captain. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party . He has served in both the South Carolina House of Representatives and the State Senate , where he served as President Pro Tempore .

After the resignation of Lieutenant Governor Eugene Gary , who took up a judge's post at the South Carolina Supreme Court , Timmerman had to take over the vacated post of Vice Governor as President Pro Tempore of the State Senate, into which he was later officially elected. He held this position between 1893 and 1898. He was Deputy Governor and formally Chairman of the Senate. Until 1894 he served under Governor Benjamin Tillman and then under his successor John Gary Evans . In 1895 Timmerman took part as a delegate to a constitutional convention of his state. He was also the State Treasurer of South Carolina on two occasions . He died on July 14, 1908.
