J. Yancey McGill (born September 18, 1952 in Kingstree , Williamsburg County , South Carolina ) is an American politician . Between June 2014 and January 2015 he was lieutenant governor of the state of South Carolina.

Career

Yancey McGill attended Francis Marion College and then graduated from The Citadel Military Academy in Charleston . Professionally, he worked in the real estate industry. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . Between 1984 and 1988 he was mayor of his hometown Kingstree; from 1988 to 2014 he was a member of the South Carolina Senate .

After Glenn F. McConnell stepped down from the post of lieutenant governor, McGill was named his successor. He held this office between June 18, 2014 and January 14, 2015. He was Deputy Governor Nikki Haley and formal chairman of the State Senate. In November 2014, McGill no longer ran for this office, which he then had to relinquish to his elected successor Henry McMaster of the Republican Party in January 2015 .
