ME Carn

Merrick Ezra "ME" Carn (born August 11, 1808 , †  January 13, 1862 in Walterboro , South Carolina ) was an American politician . Between 1858 and 1860 he was lieutenant governor of the state of South Carolina.

Career

ME Carn graduated from South Carolina College , later the University of South Carolina . After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began to work in this profession. He also worked as a planter . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . He lived in Walterboro in Colleton County . He held various local and state-wide offices. In the meantime he was mayor of his home community and prosecutor. He has served in the South Carolina House of Representatives and the State Senate .

In 1858, Carn was elected lieutenant governor of his state by the South Carolina General Assembly alongside William Henry Gist . He held this office between December 10, 1858 and December 14, 1860. He was Deputy Governor . This time was marked by the events surrounding a possible exit of his state from the Union. A few days after the end of his time as lieutenant governor, Carn was one of the signatories of the corresponding resignation. He was a staunch supporter of the South and took part in several meetings to further shape his state. M. E. Carn died on January 13, 1862 in Waterboro.
