Henry Dargan McMaster (* 27. May 1947 in Columbia , South Carolina ) is an American politician of the Republican Party. He has been the governor of South Carolina since January 24, 2017 . From 2015 to 2017 he was lieutenant governor of that state .

Career

Until 1969, Henry McMaster studied history at the University of South Carolina . Between 1969 and 1975 he was a member of the United States Army Reserve . He was temporarily used in the Vietnam War. After studying law at the University of South Carolina law school and being admitted to the bar in 1974, he began working in this profession. He worked as a lawyer for more than 29 years, but also as a public prosecutor at times. Politically, he joined the Republican Party . In the 1970s he was part of the staff of US Senator Strom Thurmond . Between 1981 and 1985 he was a federal attorneyfor South Carolina. From 1994 to 2001 McMaster served as Republican party chairman for South Carolina; from 2003 to 2011 he was Charlie Condon's successor as Attorney General of his state. Before being elected lieutenant governor, he ran for various political offices without success. In 1986 he applied for the US Senate. In 1990 his first candidacy for the office of vice governor failed, followed by an unsuccessful candidacy for the office of governor of his state in 2010 .

In 2014, McMaster was elected Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina alongside Nikki Haley. He has held this office since January 14, 2015. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . After the presidential election in 2016, the new US President Donald Trump nominated Governor Haley as Ambassador to the United Nations . After this nomination was confirmed by the US Senate and Haley took up her new position, Henry McMaster moved up to the governorship on January 24, 2017. In the next regular gubernatorial elections on November 6, 2018, McMaster was elected governor for a full four-year term with approximately 54% of the vote.
