W. Brantley Harvey

William Brantley Harvey Jr. (born August 14, 1930 in Walterboro , Colleton County , South Carolina ; † December 12, 2018 in Beaufort , South Carolina) was an American politician . Between 1975 and 1979 he was lieutenant governor of the state of South Carolina.

Career

Brantley Harvey attended public schools in his home country. In 1947 he graduated from Beaufort High School . He then attended The Citadel military school in Charleston . This was followed by a two-year military service in the US Army . After studying law at the University of South Carolina and being admitted to the bar in 1955, he began to work in his father's office ( Harvey & Battey ). He was to find his professional home there for over 50 years.

Politically, Harvey joined the Democratic Party . Between 1958 and 1974 he was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives . In 1974 he was elected Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina at the side of James B. Edwards . He held this office between 1975 and 1979. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . After his time as lieutenant governor, he held other government offices. Among other things, he was Deputy Chairman of the South Carolina Commission of Parks, Recreation and Tourism and as Commissioner of the South Carolina Department of Transportation Minister of Transportation for his state. Harvey was also a member of numerous other organizations and associations.
