William Cain

William Cain (born October 31, 1792 in Berkeley County , South Carolina , †  July 20, 1878 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1846 and 1848 he was lieutenant governor of the state of South Carolina.

Career

Nothing is known about William Cain's youth and schooling. In 1827 he and a partner bought Somerset Plantation . He later paid off his partner and ran the plantation alone. Over time, he expanded his holdings and bought another plantation, Somerton Plantation . As was common in the southern states at the time, these businesses were run with the help of slaves .

Politically, Cain joined the Democratic Party . He was a member of the South Carolina General Assembly ; but it is not stated in the sources which of the two chambers he belonged to. In 1846 he was elected lieutenant governor of South Carolina by the state legislature at the side of David Johnson . He held this office between December 8, 1846 and December 12, 1848. He was Deputy Governor . Cain lived to see the civil war and the fall of the feudal south. He died on July 20, 1878 and was buried in St. Stephen .
