Junius T. Liles

Junius T. Liles (born August 25, 1876 in Lilesville , Anson County , North Carolina , †  March 1, 1947 in Orangeburg , South Carolina ) was an American politician . Between 1919 and 1921 he was lieutenant governor of the state of South Carolina.

Career

Junius Liles attended both public and private schools. He enrolled at the University of North Carolina at the age of 17 . Due to financial problems, however, he was only able to stay there for a year. He then worked for two and a half years as a bank clerk and salesman in Marion . Then he began studying at Willmon College in Kentucky , but dropped out when the Spanish-American War broke out in 1898 to join a volunteer unit from Kentucky. From 1901 he worked in the insurance industry for the rest of his non-political life. During these years he must have settled in South Carolina as well.

Politically, Liles was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1918 he was elected lieutenant governor of South Carolina at the side of Robert Archer Cooper . He held this office between 1919 and 1921. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . After his time as Lieutenant Governor, he was no longer politically active. He died on March 1, 1947 in Orangeburg.
