Nancy Stevenson

Ferdinan Backer "Nancy" Stevenson (born June 8, 1928 as Ferdinan Backer in New Rochelle , New York , † May 31, 2001 in Floyd , Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1979 and 1983 she was lieutenant governor of the state of South Carolina .

Career

Nancy Stevenson was the granddaughter of Congressman George Swinton Legaré (1869-1913). She was born in New York State but grew up in Charleston . In the meantime, she returned to the north, where she graduated from Smith College in 1949 . After a stay abroad in Sweden , she started working as a reporter for the New York Herald Tribune newspaper . She returned to South Carolina, where she embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1975 and 1978 she was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives .

In 1978, Stevenson was elected Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina alongside Richard Riley . She held this office between 1979 and 1983. She was Deputy Governor and Chairwoman of the State Senate . To date, she is the only woman who has held the second highest government office in South Carolina. She later moved to Floyd, Virginia. She died there on May 31, 2001.
