Michael R. Daniel

Michael Roland Daniel (born April 13, 1940 in Gaffney , South Carolina ) is an American politician . Between 1983 and 1987 he was lieutenant governor of the state of South Carolina.

Career

Michael Daniel graduated from The Citadel Military School in Charleston and then studied journalism at the University of South Carolina until 1962 . After completing a law degree at the same university and being admitted to the bar in 1965, he began to work in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In the meantime he served as a first lieutenant in the United States Army for some time . He later belonged to the National Guard of his state, in which he rose to lieutenant colonel. For ten years he was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives , where he was a member of the Judiciary Committee. In the meantime he was the incumbent President of this chamber as Speaker Pro Tempore .

In 1982 Daniel was elected Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina alongside Richard Riley . He held this office between 1983 and 1987. He was Deputy Governor and formal Chairman of the State Senate . In this capacity, he led four successful trade missions for his state to the Far East. In 1986 he ran unsuccessfully for the office of governor. Since the end of his time as Lieutenant Governor, he has practiced as a lawyer again. He is a member of the American Bar Association and that of South Carolina.
