Burnet R. Maybank, Jr.

Burnet Rhett Maybank Jr. (born May 2, 1924 in Charleston , South Carolina , † October 25, 2016 ) was an American politician . From 1959 to 1963 he was lieutenant governor of the state of South Carolina.

Career

Burnet Maybank was the son of Burnet R. Maybank (1899-1954), the governor of South Carolina and the US senator for that state. In 1941 and 1942 he graduated from The Citadel Military School in Charleston. He then served in the US Army Air Corps during World War II . After completing a law degree at the University of South Carolina and being admitted to the bar in 1950, he began working in this profession in Greenville . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . From 1953 to 1958 he was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives .

In 1958 Maybank was elected Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina at the side of Fritz Hollings . He held this office from 1959 to 1963. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . Burnet Maybank was married to Marion Mitchell. The couple had two children, with their son Burnet , who was born in 1955, also practiced as a lawyer and is politically active at the state level - albeit as a Republican .
